Mend in Public Day 2026: How a Small Melbourne Event Diverted Textile Waste

Mend in Public Day 2026: How a Small Melbourne Event Diverted Textile Waste

What is Mend in Public Day?

Mend in Public Day is a global initiative encouraging people to repair clothing in visible, public spaces.

The goal is simple: make clothing repair normal again.

Instead of discarding damaged garments, communities come together to repair, extend clothing life, and reduce textile waste.

In Australia where textile consumption and waste remain high, events like this are a practical step toward circular fashion behaviour.

Our Melbourne Event Overview

Location: Otter Street Pocket Park, Collingwood
Date: Saturday 25 April 2026 (ANZAC Day public holiday)
Partner: Yarra City Council
Duration: 2–4pm

We hosted a hands-on repair activation inviting the local community to bring damaged clothing and gear along to be fixed on the spot.

Event Participation & Repairs

In just two hours:

  • 10 participants joined
  • 9 garments repaired
  • 8 used our rub-on FabPatch
  • 2 used hand sewing

Environmental Impact

Even small-scale repair creates measurable environmental benefit.

Our Mend in Public Day 2026 impact:

  • 3.6kg of textiles diverted from landfill
  • 72kg of CO₂ emissions avoided

Calculation basis:

  • 0.4kg average garment weight
  • 8kg CO₂e per kg of textile

Why Clothing Repair Matters in Australia

Australia remains one of the highest consumers of textiles per capita, with large volumes of clothing discarded due to minor damage.

Most of these items are not “worn out”, they are simply unrepaired.

Repair helps to:

  • Reduce textile waste
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Extend garment life
  • Shift behaviour from disposal to repair

How to Repair Clothes Without Sewing

One of the biggest barriers to repair is perceived complexity. No-sew repair solutions remove that barrier entirely.

With FabPatch, you can:

  • Fix holes and worn areas in minutes
  • Repair stretch fabrics and activewear
  • Avoid sewing tools or technical skill

This makes repair accessible to more people, faster.

2. No-sew repair increases uptake

FabPatch enabled quick repairs across multiple fabric types.

3. Visibility matters

Repair in public spaces helps normalise sustainable behaviour.

Challenges & Learnings

The event coincided with the ANZAC Day public holiday, which likely reduced attendance.

Key takeaway:

Timing and promotion are critical for community engagement.

What’s Next

We’ll continue exploring our partnership with Yarra City Council and scaling future events through:

  • Increased pre-event promotion
  • Stronger local awareness campaigns
  • Improved timing (avoiding public holidays)
